White Fuzzy Mold Not As Friendly As It Looks

Who: Marianne Moore, a bat researcher at Boston University. David Blehert, U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Other scientists (not named). Bats (animals).

What: Discovered white fuzzy mold that may appear to be harmless, however it is very fatal to bats. This disease is known as white-nose syndrome. This illness and the mold occurs/appears during the bats' hibernation. This is when an animal has a long sleep during the winter time. Thousands of bats are dying from this illness. A lack of these bats could cause damage to their ecosystem. Since these bats eat insects, if the bats disappear, there could be overpopulation of the insects. Scientists still are not sure if this disease is the cause of the bats dying.

When: The disease was first spotted two years ago. Since then thousands of bats have died. The disease has already harmed six bat species in just a few years!

Where: So far, this disease has been found in northeast region of the United States of America. It has mostly been found in the New England Region.

Why: This mold is very dangerous to the bat population in our country. This could damage an ecosystem and ruin several food webs and/or food chains.

Opinion: I think this mold is very bad and potentially threatening. It could cause a big problem which could end life on some parts of the earth. Okay so maybe it's not that dramatic but it still endangers an animal that is valueable. We should find the cause and look for a cure to help the bats in America!
