Study: Shower heads Loaded With Bacteria

Who: Norman Pace from the University of Colorado and co-workers. This affects all Americans, but mostly those with compromised immune systems.

What: Shower head that are loaded with dangerous bacteria. This bacteria is know as Mycobacterium Avium. It can cause diseases such as pulmonary disease. There were samples take from 45 apartments buildings, homes and other public areas. 20 percent found this dangerous bacteria when swabbed. The bacteria seems to hide out inside shower heads.

When: This information was released on September 14th, 2009.

Where: The samples were taken from nine different cities from the states of New York, Illinois, North Dakota, Colorado and Tennessee. Although these were the only places tested, the bacteria can probably be found all over the country, maybe all over the world.

Why: Why is it important that we look out for this? This can cause serious diseases that could kill several Americans. We do not want anyone to die, therefore, we should all take a few simple precautions such as changing shower heads, preferably using metal shower heads.

How: All our water comes from municipal water. The water that comes out of the shower heads has 100 times the amount of bacteria than the municipal waters. We can assume that the bacteria might be in our shower heads and even in our water pipes.

Opinion: I think it was quite shocking to read this article. I never thought that you could be jepordizing you life by showering. I wish that they find a way to fix this. Also, I hope they find a way to know whether your showerhead has the dangerous bacteria or not without getting it tested. I never thought about this until now, however, when you go to wash you hands, won't the knobs also be dirty? I mean, you touch them with your hands while they are still dirty, and then again after you wash them in order to turn the water off. This is actually kinda scary. It makes me wonder if it is safer to shower, or not to shower. However, just as Norman Pace said, "It's like anything else -- there is a risk associated with it."
