Reptiles

A few days ago, people from a nearby (well, it's not THAT nearby) zoo came to our school and showed us different types of reptiles. The four groups of reptiles are crocodiles/alligators, turtles/tortoises, snakes and lizards. Do you know how to tell the difference between crocodiles and alligators? There are three major physical differences. One is their skin color. Alligators are black and crocodiles come in every other color. In my opinion, this is probably the easiest and safest way to tell them apart. You can notice their color from a safe distance. Also, the crocodiles have a narrow V-shaped snout. On the other hand, alligators have a wider U-shaped snout. Lastly when crocodiles close their mouths, you can see both bottom and top teeth. With alligators, you can only see their top teeth. Hopefully, you will never be close enough to a member of the crocodilian order to be able to see their teeth. If you do, my advise would be to run!
Turtles have a very long lifespan. Many turtles can live over one hundred years. Did you know that all types of sea-turtles are endangered? Many other turtles.tortoises are also endangered. If you every see a product made out of a turtle's shell, remember that the turtle died in order for that product to be made.
Snakes are very fascinating. Did you know that 90% of snakes are boa constrictors? These snakes are not usually venomous. Instead, they wrap around their prey and squeeze it until its prey dies due to a lack of air. Most snakes do not have to eat often. Snakes never have legs or arms. The slither to get around.
Lizards are our last type of reptile. Lizards are very fascinating. These reptiles have very long tails. Many lizards can detach their tails from their body. When this happens, their tail will grow back. However, their tail will never be as long as it was before. Not all lizards have feet, though most of them do. Though these lizards nay look like snakes, they are not. Lizards have ears while snakes do not.
Other Facts: Did you know that there are only two venomous lizards in the world? its true! The Gila monster and the Mexican bearded lizard are the only venomous lizards in the entire world! Also, many lizards can squirt blood from their eyes. Gross! Young basilisks and collared lizards can walk on water! I would love to try that.
Opinion: I thought it was cool to learn about reptiles but I didn't like the fact that it was in the auditorium and that we didn't get to touch the animals. It would be more fun if we actually went to the zoo. Reptiles are very fascinating.
